International Rugby League appoints Greg Barclay as its new Chair

International Rugby League has appointed Greg Barclay to be the organisation’s first independent Chair following a wide-ranging review of governance carried out in 2018 and 2019. Barclay is a highly respected and experienced sports administrator who has just started his last term as the Chair of New Zealand Cricket. He is also a board member of the International Cricket Council. He is a qualified lawyer with particular experience in commercial and business law, and previously established a sports event management, travel and sponsorship business.

The Chair will be joined by two other independent directors appointed after an extensive search and recruitment process.

The Honourable Troy Grant had a significant 22-year career in Policing & Emergency Management before being elected to the New South Wales parliament where he had numerous significant ministerial roles including Deputy Premier and  Tourism & Major Events Minister in the NSW government. Troy will also serve as a Deputy Chair alongside current IRL Chair, Graeme Thompson, who will move to a Deputy Chair role as well.

The new directors will take up their appointments on 10th January 2020 with Greg Barclay assuming the Chair on 1st February 2020.

Outgoing Chair, Graeme Thompson stated:

“This is another significant landmark for the evolution of the IRL. We are very pleased with these appointments as they bring independent persons to the Board with significant skills and experience to add to those we already have.

“I look forward to working with Greg, Troy and Emma.”

Greg Barclay commented:

“I am humbled and proud to be the first independent Chair of the IRL. I am thoroughly looking forward to working with the Board, staff, members and other stakeholders to continue the global growth of Rugby League. I believe there are many opportunities across the globe that we can develop, which will build on the work of the last few years.”

Troy Grant welcomes his appointment to the Board by saying:

“Rugby league has been a huge part of my whole life from ball boy to playing, coaching & managing juniors, refereeing and establishing & administering a competition. It is a privilege to be a part of rugby league’s world governing body. I am very keen to be part of the sport’s growth. I will be a passionate advocate for the sport utilising my political experience and networks to enhance our present stakeholder relationships and help to take our sport into new geographies and cultures.”

Emma Young said:  "I am delighted to be appointed to the Board of IRL as one of its first independent non-executive directors and am excited about helping build on the success of Rugby League globally and support its inclusive and diverse approach to growing the sport."

“I am looking forward to working alongside our new independent directors, our existing Board and the whole membership to continue, and enhance the growth of international rugby league across the whole world.”
