Emerging Nations World Cup - Day 1 Round up

The Rugby League Emerging Nations got off to a flying start today with European teams taking all the honours on Day One at Windsor, New South Wales.

In the opening game of the tournament Malta met the Philppines in Pool A. It was Malta's Nathan Benson who opened the scoring with a try which he converted himself. Despite some rugged defence from the Philippines, it was Malta who continued to dominate the first half going into half time with a 22 - 6 lead. The second half followed a familiar pattern as Malta dominated a determined Tamaraws team to finally win the game by 36 - 10.

Game two saw Turkey face the Soloman Islands in a Group C game. It would take Turkey just 2 minutes to grab the game’s opening try, launching an assault on the Solomon Islands‘ line after an error before a neat kick through from Jaydin Salman-Cochrane was collected by Arda Dalcik who raced through to score. This start allowed Turkey to dominate the first half going in with a 20 - 6 half time lead.

The second half was more promising for the Soloman Islands as they scored three tries to close the gap on Turkey but never close enough. Turkey completed the victory by 30 points to 22

In the final action of the day, Hungary and Greece exchanged the lead on a number of occasions before the Magyar Bulls finally prevailed 20 - 18. In a game that was influenced by the breeze that blew up late in the day, the game entered the final four minutes with the scores level. An out the back cut out found centre Billy Mozer who then went out to his winger Brent Vor Goh on the overlap who stepped back on the inside of the fullback and was able to ground the ball. The conversion by Jared Forkorsh gave Hungary the 2 point lead again with just a few minutes remaining.

Despite being given a final minute attacking set, the Hungary defence stood firm and kept Greece out.
